New Shanghai stadium opening with esports

The newly built Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium in China will host an esports tournament as its first event.

The 2020 League of Legends World Championship will begin on September 25, with the competition set to wrap up at the stadium on October 31.

Championship organiser Riot Games had originally planned to hold the championship at Shanghai Stadium but the event has now been moved to the new venue, which will be home to Shanghai SIPG football club.

As one of the venues for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium is a professional football stadium designed to meet the requirements of FIFA’s A-level competitions.

Covering a construction area of 139,304 square meters, the stadium has a unique and ground-breaking seating bowl design that maximises the view to the football pitch from all the 33,765 seats, while creating an intimate atmosphere for the spectators.

Apart from the capacity of hosting world class football events, the stadium is also equipped with professional esports facilities.

The stadium, designed by architects HPP, focuses on creating a world-class sports venue that places the spectator experience at the centre.

The seating bowl’s significantly steep seating offers improved sightlines without compromising the safety of the spectator. At every level, the number of seats per row is minimal so that fans travel only a short distance to reach the aisle. The stands offer multiple tiers of seating with various levels of amenities, enhancing the atmosphere for a diverse variety of supporter groups.

The stadium bowl is wrapped in a delicate veil of folding louvers. The veil outline flows in the opposite direction to the profile of the stadium bowl, creating a wave to the upper part of the stadium.  This rippling exterior façade reflects the city’s historic link to water and its layered white materials create a figurative reference to the Chinese Magnolia, the flower of Shanghai.

The masterplan integrates the stadium within the urban life of the Pudong District, where green open spaces and the waterfront street will add common public areas. In addition to an efficient connectivity, the pedestrian streets unify the four main blocks within the masterplan. The five areas of function — leisure and recreation, SOHO community, creative and research offices, hotel, and retail shopping mall — create a 24 hour community.
